Fellowship Programme Policy

The Fellowship Programme reflects the World Congress commitment to improving equity of access and sharing a global exchange of knowledge and experience, by supporting excellent candidates from low and lower-middle income economies to participate in the Congress.  

The Congress theme is Shaping change by collaborating for a healthier and safer world of work. 

  • Provide opportunities to attend the Congress to people from low and lower-middle income economies to ensure global collaboration for a healthier and safer world of work  

  • Develop the professional network 

  • Promote safety and health preventative culture at the global level 

  • Strengthen the capacity of fellows to improve safety and health at work in their communities  

  • Provide the fellows with opportunities to exchange knowledge and ideas they can use in their own work 

  • Bring diverse perspectives to the Congress through Fellows sharing their experiences  

  • Implement measures to ensure balance in gender, developed and developing and region  


To be eligible to apply for the Fellowship Programme you must:  

  • Be from a low or lower-middle income economy as defined by the World Bank 

  • Commit to travel to Sydney, Australia to attend the Congress in person  

  • Have experience in OSH (personal or professional)  

  • Meet incoming and outgoing Australian visa eligibility requirements  

  • Commit to attending the Congress and sharing your experiences and perspectives 

  • Answer an evaluation form following the Congress  

How to apply 
  • Applications can be made in English or French and should address the questions and include examples.  

  • Written applications: responses to each question must be limited to 100 words.

Key dates 

Fellowship applications open: 30 August 2022 

Fellowship applications close: 30 November 2022 

Fellowship offers made: April 2023     

All applicants who apply for the in-person fellowship and are unsuccessful will automatically be considered for the virtual fellowship without the requirement to reapply.  


Fellowship inclusions  

The fellowship is non-transferable.  

Successful in-person fellows will receive:  

  • Return economy airfares direct to Sydney from the nearest international airport to your home 

  • Transport costs for travel in your home country to the nearest international airport 

  • Visa costs   

  • A maximum of 5 nights accommodation in Sydney from 26 – 30 November 2023 

  • A daily allowance for 26 – 30 November 2023 inclusive  

  • Airport transfer (Sydney airport – CBD) 

  • A ticket to the Congress which includes:  

  • Access for one participant to the World Congress being held at the International Convention Centre (ICC) 

  • Ticket to the opening ceremony and welcome function on 27 November 2023 

  • Morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea on 28 and 29 and 30 November 2023 at the ICC 

  • Access to all sessions  

  • One ticket to the Australia night being held on 28 November 2023 

  • On-demand access to recorded sessions  

  • Interactive forums (in person and online)  

  • Social and networking sessions and platforms used in the online programme  

Fellowships do not cover travel insurance and associated liability. The organiser is not responsible for any mandatory quarantine fees and travel and border responsibility rests with the individual arriving into Sydney, New South Wales. Please visit the Australian Government Department of Health website for up-to-date information regarding International travel to  Australia and COVID-19. 

The organiser is not responsible for arranging visas. Successful Fellows must apply for visas themselves. 


Virtual Fellows 

Successful Virtual Fellows will receive one virtual ticket which includes:  

  • Access for one participant to the World Congress online platform 

  • Access to all sessions  

  • On-demand access to recorded sessions (until x date) 

  • Interactive forums   

  • Social and networking sessions and platforms used in the online programme  


The World Congress is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all participants. Racism, sexism, ageism, ableism or any other form of discrimination, harassment or intimidation will not be tolerated. All participants are expected to behave courteously and respectfully towards others. If a participant behaves in a manner that is disruptive, offensive, dangerous or illegal the Congress reserves the right to revoke or cancel their fellowship and eject the participant from the Congress. 


By registering for the Congress you agree to adhere to any health regulations and mandates in place issued by the Australian Federal Government, NSW Health, or the venue at the time of the Congress. Failure to adhere to mandates or regulations will result in the participant being asked to leave the event or removed from the event if they do not cooperate. If a participant is asked to leave or removed for failing to comply with health regulations or mandates, there will be no refunds issued.  

By registering for the Congress you accept the risk of contracting COVID-19 or any other illness.   


By registering for the Congress you consent to photography and video recording.  

Confidentiality and privacy  

By registering for the Congress you agree to accept SafeWork NSW will collect your personal information so that we can provide you services in relation to the Congress, including sharing event updates via email and understanding and analysing audience segments in terms of industries, job roles, topics of interest and other information. 

The personal information we collect from you when you register will be stored by SafeWork NSW in an event database. 

The event database will be shared with the organisers of the 24th World Congress on Safety and Health at Work (including the ILO and the ISSA) to assist them in organising the 24th World Congress on Safety and Health at Work. By disclosing your personal information to us you consent to the access to and use of your personal information by the ILO, the ISSA and the other co-organiser(s) of the 24th World Congress on Safety and Health at Work. 

Your personal information may also be disclosed to our service providers engaged in connection with the delivery of the Congress.
